Cleveland-Women's Voices, Women Dancing is a three-week festival at Cleveland Public Theatre that showcases talented women artists, including two openly lesbian poets.
Openly lesbian Mary Player and Heidi Sulzer are among the five women who will present an evening of poetry and spoken

word performance on Saturday, September 28. Organizer Mary Weems, an AfricanAmerican performance poet, will also be performing that night.
Each week of the festival features a different aspect of women's art. The first week focuses on spoken word performances and poetry. Week two features dance, and week three features two local theater artists in one woman performances.
A dance performance entitled Women's Work directed by choreographer and dancer Colleen Clark will be presented the second week.
Women's Work is a concert of eight pieces that will be presented five or six a night.
"The concert promises to be an eclectic collection of works by and about strongminded, independent women of courage,"
said Clark in her curator's statement.
One piece is set to a text excerpted from a story about a woman with AIDS. The concert also includes a duet exploring mother-daughter relationships. The dance performances will be interspersed with stories from the dancers' lives.
"Women have a special way of revealing their private lives in their work," said Clark in a phone interview.
A double bill will be offered in the third week, beginning with Nancy Burkinshaw's performance piece entitled Gypsy Logic! This a collection of spoken word history, stories and observation presented by Reubenska, a self-proclaimed Queen of the Gypsies. Immediately afterward, Lisa Black will perform her one-woman Murderer's Bay.
Burkinshaw said in a phone interview that while Gypsy Logic is not specifically lesbian, lesbians will be able to relate to it.
"It is a culture that has absolutely no shame when it comes to loving other women," Burkinshaw explained. "If you do not love other women, you don't survive.”
